 We are pleased to announce a rennie Speaker Series artist talk by Gary Simmons. Staging history through the looking glass of popular culture, Simmons’ work exposes the impossibility of abolishing racial and cultural stereotypes from our shared memory, presenting a balanced, forthright address of racial, social and cultural politics. The artist will talk about the recurring ideas and new developments in his work.

Gary Simmons (b. 1964) has presented work in the 56th Venice Biennale; The Dia Center, New York; Perez Art Museum, Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Kunsthaus Zurich; California African American Museum, Los Angeles; Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates; Studio Museum, Harlem; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; The Jumex Collection, Mexico City, among many others. He is the recipient of 1990 National Endowment for the Arts Interarts Grant, the 1991 Penny McCall Foundation Grant, as well as 2007 USA Gund Fellowship. In 2013, Simmons was awarded Studio Museum’s the Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize, given to African-American artists of great innovation and promise. The artist lives and works in New York.
